Pros

  • Crisp grapefruit notes
  • Thick mouthfeel

When a naturally processed East African coffee is done well, it’s hard to beat in my book. They are sweet, fruit-forward, and decadent—three things I always like to find in a coffee. This Burundi coffee from the Cumba Commune and roasted by Topeca Coffee checked all those boxes and more.

The coffee began with a rich fragrance that reminded me of sweet malt and dark fruit. The flavor was quite tasty with rich dark fruits, grapefruit & black tea. The mouthfeel was smooth, heavy, and carried throughout the entire sip with a lush decadence. The sweetness reminded me of sweet citrus and the acidity was strong, steady, and crisp. The profile reminded me of a mix of other East African profiles (especially Kenyan coffee), which was an exciting combination.

The Bottom Line

This coffee from Topeca was delicious. The crisp citrus paired with the lush body made for a really fun combination to explore—and at a price point that is lower than most other specialty coffee you’ll find of similar quality.
