When it comes to coffee attributes, brightness/acidity is one that I enjoy almost more than any other. A delicious cup of coffee bursting with acidity is truly hard to beat in my opinion. For that reason, I was really excited to try Kuma Coffee’s coffee named specifically for its brightness. The coffee in “Bright” changes seasonally, but always consists of coffees that combine to make a beautifully bright and acidic cup of coffee. The coffee currently used at the time of this review was Ethiopia Halo Bariti 2020 Crop.
The coffee begins with a sweet fragrance full of bright berry notes. I also smelled some notes that reminded me of sweet tomatoes, a sweet/savory combination I always enjoy. In the flavor I tasted raspberry, milk chocolate and lime. The acidity was incredibly strong and sweet immediately. As the coffee cooled, the acidity became a bit less pronounced and the smoother chocolate notes came through more clearly. There was a crisp, berry sweetness throughout and I tasted some unique floral notes in the finish.
The Bottom Line
I really enjoyed the unique flavor combinations in this coffee and their evolution within each sip and within the larger drinking experience. While it lived up to its name sake and was certainly bright, it was also much more. It was sweet, fruit-forward and an extremely tasty coffee from start to finish.
