Manhattan Coffee out of the Netherlands has been one of my favorite international roasters for years, so it was not a surprise when I took a poll on Instagram about what international roasters people wanted to see featured in the coffee club that Manhattan topped the list. Their Diego Bermudez has been a favorite of mine for years, but I had never tried any of their Ethiopian offerings—until this Shoondhisa. This is a naturally processed Ethiopian coffee from the Guji region and has all the complexity you’d expect.
The coffee begins with sweet, crisp, berry aromatics in the dry grounds. After brewing, the sweetness continues into the profile that is bursting with an almost juice-like berry sweetness. I get notes that remind me of decadent berry pies, but also some supporting floral undertones. The coffee has a lovely brightness that is crisp and pairs wonderfully with the juicy body. The finish is long and lingers in your mouth.
The Bottom Line
Manhattan delivers another amazing coffee with this Shoondhisa. Its complexity and sweetness have made it one of my favorite Ethiopian coffees of late. This coffee was featured in a custom set for the Pull & Pour Coffee Club in February of 2023. If you missed that set, be sure to sign up for the free club to have a chance at picking up other great club-exclusive offerings like this.
