Ethiopian Wush Wush coffees are some of the most sought after and unique coffees you can find. They can drive some incredibly high prices and deliver some of the most unique and exciting flavor profiles in coffee. The first Wush Wush I ever tried was from Cirque Coffee Roasters and it remains one of my favorite coffees I’ve ever had. I’ve tried a few Wush Wush coffees more recently and have been a bit disappointed with the results. For that reason, I was very excited to try one from one of my favorite roasters, My Friend’s Coffee, to see if it could restore my love for Wush Wush coffees. And boy am I glad I did.
The coffee began with a sweet, slightly funky fragrance with notes of fermented berries. It was incredibly unique and wonderfully intoxicating. The flavor of this coffee was a knockout and hard to accurately describe. It was sweet and slightly tart with notes of funky watermelon. It had an incredibly complex and unique fruit and floral combination and some yeasty, fermented undertones—wild, I know. The acidity was fairly strong with a sweet-tart profile and a brightness that mixed with the dark funkiness of the coffee. The mouthfeel was smooth & silky and the rich sweetness reminded me of fruity caramel notes. Although there was a unique funkiness throughout, the coffee was quite clean and worked well in a variety of pour over brew methods and actually may have been my favorite when brewed with the AeroPress.
The Bottom Line
This coffee was everything I expected from a Wush Wush and more. It was incredibly complex, uniquely funky and wonderfully delicious. Gary at My Friend’s Coffee knocked it out of the park again with an incredible coffee that I enjoyed fully until the final brew.
