Disclosure: Pull & Pour received coffee samples for this post, however, as always, all opinions are 100% my own.
Kaldi’s Coffee is a hometown favorite of mine and the selections from their Cupping Room series have always delighted. This El Salvador Los Bellotos Beenardina features a coffee varietal I had never tried before. The Pacas family discovered the Bernardina varietal on their farm and it is genetically related to both Geisha and Ethiopian Agaro.
The coffee begins with a sweet, but slightly delicate aroma of chocolate and orange zest. The flavor was extremely rich and creamy with notes of chocolate, pomegranate and citrus. The coffee was full and decadent with a thick, robust body. There was a floral sweetness with undertones of citrus. The acidity carried throughout, but was not overpowering and led to a very balanced and approachable cup. The finish was heavy and leaves the mouth feeling full even after you swallow.
The Bottom Line
El Salvador Los Bellotos Bernardina was another solid coffee in Kaldi’s Cupping Room series. The richness paired with the complexity and layers in the flavor led to a unique, yet approachable cup of coffee that I think most speciality coffee lovers would enjoy.
