Burundi has had a rough few seasons for coffee—at least from my experience. I’ve seen very few Burundi’s available over the past year or two and the few I’ve tried have been lackluster at best. For that reason, I was really excited to get to try a Burundi from Folly Coffee as part of my Crema.co subscription that received such good reviews.

The coffee begins with a medium intensity sweet-toned fragrance of apple and tropical fruit. As I began to drink the coffee I tasted apple, papaya and apricot. Each of these flavor notes became sweeter and more pronounced as the coffee cooled. The coffee has a nice citrus acidity that comes on strong at the front and lingers through the finish. The sweetness overall was a bit flat and unimpressive. It was present throughout, but not very noticeable. The coffee was balanced, clean and worked well in a variety of brew methods. I was a bit disappointed with the complexity overall though. The coffee evolved nicely as it cooled, but I wanted a bit more depth to the flavor notes in general.
The Bottom Line
This coffee was a bright spot in a series of lack-luster Burundi’s recently. I don’t know if it was on par with some other high-quality African origins (Ethiopians, Kenyans, etc.), but it showed a lot of potential and was still a very tasty coffee.
