Feast Coffee is a California roaster I’ve had my eye on for awhile, so I was so excited when Crema.co added them as their newest roaster to the subscription service a few weeks back.
Ethiopia Dimtu is from the Guji region of Ethiopia, which usually has a bit more balanced acidity and floral/spice/chocolate notes than its counterparts from the Sidamo and Yirgacheffe regions (which tend to be much higher acidity and fruit forward). That was exactly what I found to be the case.
The coffee begins with a bright, sweet and floral aroma that carries through to the flavor, which had the same sweet and floral notes, but also some nice tropical fruit notes at the very beginning of each sip. The acidity was present, but not overpowering and lingered throughout each sip. I really enjoyed the body, which was silky smooth and coated your lips (feeling almost like chapstick) with each sip. The finish was long and pronounced with a lingering sparkle from the acidity long after you finished each sip. My only real criticism is the lack of evolution throughout the cup. There was a nice layering of flavors, but not much of an evolution throughout each sip or as the temperature of the coffee cooled.
The Bottom Line
Ethiopia Dimtu fits the expected profile very well, while still finding ways to be unexpected. It is a solid Ethiopian option and a great first experience with Feast Coffee.
