Snapchilled™ Coffees are ready-to-drink, canned, single-origin coffees from Elemental Beverage Company. Unlike the usual cold brew process of seeping the coffee grounds for 12-24 hours, Snapchilled Coffee uses a special process of “snapchilling” the coffee to immediately cool the coffee before canning. Essentially the coffee is brewed hot, but then immediately cooled to temperatures as low as -10 degrees Fahrenheit within minutes. The benefit of this approach is you maintain the more delicate aromas and flavors that get lost many times in the longer cold brew process.

My favorite iced coffee brew method is the Japanese Iced Coffee method where you pour hot water over coffee grounds and into a container filled with ice. Like with the snapchilling process, the instant cooling down of the coffee with the ice helps to preserve flavors and aromas. I’ve found the result to be pretty spectacular at preserving all of the elements I love in the fruit-forward, vibrant coffees. For this reason, I was especially excited to try Snapchilled Coffee to see if it could produce the same results.

The other differentiator with Snapchilled Coffee is the quality of the coffee. Many cold brew coffees are made with a blend of coffees, but Snapchilled Coffees all feature single-origin coffee from some of my favorite regions—Kayanza, Burundi; Kolla Bolcha, Ethiopia; and San Alejo, Colombia. They stress the quality of the coffee and the quality of the brewing process they use to brew the coffee before canning.

So, enough about the type of coffee and the brewing process, how did the coffee actually taste? In a word, delicious. If I hadn’t been drinking it from a can, I think it easily could have passed for the Japanese iced coffee I make and love. There was complexity, depth to flavors and some great aromatics with each of the three coffees. Here’s a summary of what I tasted with each one:

  • Kayanza, Burundi: The Burundi was sweet with some wonderful berry fruitiness. It had a nice citrus acidity and a smooth body.
  • Kolla Bolcha, Ethiopia: The Ethiopian was incredibly juicy with some great fruit notes throughout. It had a light body and was a bit more delicate than the other two. It had some wonderful sweetness throughout as well.
  • San Alejo, Colombia: The Colombian was balanced with a light body. I tasted some strong notes of chocolate, but my favorite attribute was the sweet, orange finish at the end of every sip.

I enjoyed each of them and was impressed with the differences found between each coffee—they truly are three different and unique coffees.

The Bottom Line

The Snapchilled Coffees have been some of the best ready-to-drink canned coffee I have tried. They were able to capture a lot of the aromatics and flavor notes I love in traditionally brewed coffee, but in a cold and canned format. They are a bit pricy at $5/can, but are really worth a try in my opinion. Elemental Beverage Co. shared a 25% off coupon too to make the first order a bit less expensive too!
